Saturn Awards
The Institute of Science Fiction, Daydream, and Horror Movies offers the annual “Saturn Awards” for American movies. The awards were first established to celebrate science fiction, fantasy, and horror films, but they have subsequently expanded to embrace other genre fiction movies, as well as television shows and home media releases. When the Saturn Awards were first established in 1973, they were known as the “Golden Scrolls”.
This award was presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films.
History
Donald A. Reed created the Saturn Awards in 1973 because he believed that at the time, the established Hollywood film industry’s award system did not adequately honor work in science fiction films. Initially, a Golden Scroll certificate served as the reward. In the latter half of the 1970s, the trophy was modified to resemble the planet Saturn with film-based rings.
Individuals of the showing Academy cast votes for the Saturn Awards. The Academy is a nonprofit with a public application process for membership. Robert Holguin, the company’s president, and producers/writers Bradley Marcus and Kevin Marcus are the executive producers. Among its members are the directors James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, Bryan Singer, Bryan Fuller, Mark A. Altman, J. J. Abrams, and Bryan Singer.
The Saturn Awards have awarded works in numerous dramatic genres, even though the Awards still mainly focus on media in the science fiction, fantasy, and horror categories. Additionally, there are unique awards for lifelong contributions to the film industry.
